It is an exciting time for our nation and the solar industry. Energy awareness has increased along with the tax credits and utility rebates.
Payback Time Decreases for Solar Installations
During 2008, the average utility rate in Arizona increased by three percent (3%). This year's rate increases are expected to be at or above last year's. When you add the rate increase with the new federal tax credit incentive (30% tax credit on the net cost with no cap), the simple payback for solar hot water systems is now only 3-6 years. Payback on photovoltaic systems is 10-14 years.
Solar Systems Increase Resale Home Values
Recently, the Real Estate Appraiser's Journal investigated the resale value of homes that included solar energy. The study, which included over 1,800 homes, found that for every dollar of annual energy savings there was a $20 increase in resale value when compared to similar home sales. Typical solar hot water systems save over $300 a year in energy costs resulting in a $6,000 increase in the home's resale value. The installed cost of a solar hot water system is about $2,000 (after utility rebates and tax credits), over 300% return on investment!

TEP and UNISOURCE
TEP has made a request to the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) to move rebate incentive funds from the over funded residential category to the commercial category, which is currently out of resources.
SSVEC
By the end of 2009, SSVEC will implement net metering for grid-tie PV systems.
SRP and APS
Both utilities now require contractors installing solar applications have the appropriate Registrar of Contractor (ROC) licenses which are K-11 Electrical and K-77 Plumbing with Solar designations. Review your contractor's licensing with the ROC before signing your contract to ensure they have the appropriate licensure and certification. Incorrect licensure may result in denial of utility rebates!
TRICO
The utility company is currently out of funds for it's SunWatts program. TRICO has applied to the Arizona Corporation Commision to obtain additional funds by raising the REST from $1 per month to $2. Furthermore, TRICO expects a REST charge of $4 per month will be required to cover 2010's anticipated installations.
